Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 267-270-2118 or dr.patmullen@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I do not currently participate in any insurance networks. However, many of my patients are able to receive significant reimbursement for sessions through their out-of-network mental health benefits.

If your plan includes out-of-network coverage, I can provide you with a superbill (detailed, coded receipt) which you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement.

I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits, including:

  • Whether services provided by a licensed psychologist (PhD or PsyD) are covered

  • What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed

  • Whether you must meet a deductible first

  • How to submit a superbill

I’m happy to help guide you through this process if you have questions.

  • Initial Assessment (90 minutes): $225

  • Ongoing Therapy Sessions (60 minutes): $175

I offer a sliding scale for those with financial need—please don’t hesitate to ask about eligibility.

If you plan to use out-of-network benefits, note that your insurance provider is required to explain your mental health coverage upon request, including reimbursement rates for services with a licensed psychologist.

I’m a licensed psychologist (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology with over 12 years of direct patient care experience. I began my career as a behavioral health technician and have trained and worked my way through nearly every level of care—gaining firsthand insight into what truly helps people heal and grow.

I’ve completed advanced training in evidence-based approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

I’m licensed in Pennsylvania (License #PS020338; NPI #1548058373). More than anything, I pride myself on blending science-backed therapy with real human connection, offering care that’s both clinically sound and deeply personal.

I work with adults of all ages, as well as older adolescents.

Through my training and clinical experience, I’ve developed particular expertise in working with emerging adults (typically individuals ages 18 to 30) who feel stuck or overwhelmed by cycles of anxiety, depression, substance use, or disconnection.

I also enjoy working with people from all walks of life, and I’ve had the privilege of supporting men and women at various stages of adulthood as they navigate life transitions, personal growth, and obstacles.

Not sure if we’re the right fit? I offer a free consultation to explore your goals and questions. My style and approach may not be for everyone, and that’s okay, I’m happy to help connect you with other excellent colleagues if needed.

 I specialize in treating:

  • Addiction and substance use disorders

  • Co-occurring mental health and substance use issues

  • Anxiety and mood disorders

  • Trauma-related concerns

  • Relationship and family dynamics

  • Young adults navigating life transitions

My approach is rooted in what’s called a transdiagnostic model of care. This means I don’t just treat surface-level symptoms or isolated diagnoses, I work with individuals and families to understand and address the underlying processes that drive distress and disconnection.

In today’s healthcare landscape, diagnoses can sometimes become little more than checklists. I aim to go deeper, working with you beyond labels like “depression,” “anxiety,” or “addiction” to get at the root causes of suffering and change. Together, we’ll build clarity, develop meaningful goals, and move toward sustainable healing.

My approach is grounded in evidence-based, experiential therapy that integrates the science of behavior change with the realities of human complexity.

I primarily draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)—a mindfulness-based approach that helps you move toward what matters most, even in the presence of difficult thoughts or feelings.

We won’t just analyze problems, we’ll build the skills and habits that help you create a life that reflects your values.

I also incorporate techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to support insight, emotional regulation, and meaningful change.

But therapy with me goes beyond thoughts and emotions. I take a whole-person perspective—recognizing the deep connections between mental health, physical health, and relational health. That means we may look at areas like sleep, nutrition, movement, boundaries, family dynamics, and community—because your well-being is shaped by all of it.

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Together, we’ll tailor a process that’s active, collaborative, and rooted in real-world tools—so you can function better, not just feel better.

Yes, I offer both in-person sessions in a professional, private office and secure virtual video sessions.

While I generally prefer to meet in person, especially for the initial assessment, I understand the importance of flexibility and accessibility. For those who prefer or require remote care, I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform for virtual sessions.

Let me know your preferences—we’ll find what works best for you.

It depends.

The length of therapy varies based on many factors: your goals, the nature of what you're working through, and the pace of progress, which can be unpredictable at times.

That said, here’s my philosophy:
My ultimate goal is to get fired. In other words, the best outcome is when you no longer need me. That means we’ve done our job well, together.

Therapy shouldn't create dependence. It should build insight, skill, and independence. My job is to help equip you with tools you can carry forward and use long after our work together ends. For some people, that may take 6 sessions. For others, 12 or more. There's no one-size-fits-all timeline.

What I can promise is that I’ll never rush your process.

My approach is active, experiential, and focused on real change; not just talking, but doing. We’ll work together to help you make meaningful shifts and build a life aligned with your values.

Many of my patients reach a place of sustained progress and check in occasionally for booster sessions, whether it's a tough season, a big life decision, or just a tune-up. That’s always an option.

The initial assessment is 90 minutes long and includes a full biopsychosocial history, a discussion of your goals, and the beginnings of a personalized care plan.

It’s also a chance for us to assess fit, and to make sure I’m the right provider for your needs.

Yes, I work directly with family members, especially those impacted by addiction, mental illness, or caregiving stress. I also facilitate family sessions as part of a broader treatment plan, when appropriate and agreed upon by all parties.

As a licensed psychologist, I do not prescribe medications. However, I collaborate closely with prescribers (psychiatrists, primary care physicians, psych NPs) when medication may be a helpful part of your treatment plan. I can help you explore those options and refer you to trusted providers.

I may be able to provide clinical documentation depending on the circumstances. This is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and typically requires a minimum number of sessions to ensure appropriate clinical understanding. I do not provide forensic evaluations or court-mandated assessments.
